“Mabon”, William Abraham, (1842-1922)

22946_1.JPG William Abraham, better known as “Mabon” is famous in Welsh historic circles as a trade union leader, miner’s leader and MP.He certainly wasnt born in Pentre, he was born in Cwmavon, yet he came to live in Pentre and his house still stands there to the day.

Much has been written on him but little is known of his involvement in religious life in Pentre. Only a single record in Harpers’ New Monthly Magazine mentions his involvement with Nazareth Chapel in Pentre which would have happened during his 40s and is also a year after he became MP for the Rhondda for the first time. His early life is no less interesting – he even travelled to Chile in his 20s to work in the copper mines!

harpers.jpgThis extract from an article detailing “Working-Men In the British Parliament”, found in Harper’s new monthly magazine Volume 73 (September 1886), describes William Abraham, or “Mabon” who used to teach the choir at Nazareth and was a member there. Mabon went on to sit in the House of Commons. – See page on Mabon.
